Other methods - Design guides
Examples include Transit NZ's Guidelines for the Management of Road Traffic Noise - Appendix 6 (PDF 310 KB), council codes of practice, and MfE 's urban design guide 'People Places Spaces '. Both Wellington City and Auckland City (Annexure 13) have design guidelines to assist development in their central areas, while Auckland City has design guides that apply to particular areas of the isthmus. This is particularly important in relation to such issues as access to public spaces, connectivity and the relationship to adjacent transport routes.
Other methods - Structure plans
These are prepared to manage growth in a holistic and pro-active way and can either be linked to, or incorporated into, a district plan (like a design guideline). Structure plans often have a wider focus than simply transport, and can address social (eg, where we live, housing) as well as environmental matters (eg, stream quality, coastal, number of reserves). Refer to the Structure Planning guidance note or the ARC 's Guide to Structure Planning for more information.
